Julian & Romero in the New York International Fringe Festival 2015

Press release-

During the heated Cuban revolution of the 1960's, two young men find friendship in a UMAP Prison camp. Tough choices are challenged by sex, faith and culture. Dreams and nightmares come alive in a play with music, dance and passion.

Julian & Romero premiered at the The Dream Up Festival in September 2013 at Theater for the New City.  Now is back on stage thanks to the New York International Fringe Festival, Present Company, MK Productions, Luis Ochoa-Andrade & Barbara Carames.

With Sebastian Stimman, Gonzalo Trigueros, Edna Lee Figueroa and Jerry Soto* (*Courtesy of Actors Equity Association).  An exciting and excited cast, no doubt! Stimman (Julian), Trigueros (Romero) and Figueroa (Bertha) return for this second time on stage joined by Soto (Raúl). Sebastian was born and raised in Lima, Peru into a German/Scandinavian family, Gonzalo is from Argentina, and Edna Lee and Jerry are both born and raised in Puerto Rico.

Set in the 1960's, JULIAN & ROMERO is the intimate story of two young Cuban men; a communist soldier under Castro's revolution and his childhood best friend. Both are now at odds with each other's political, sexual and religious beliefs. The play unfolds inside the inhumane world of a UMAP prison camp. It’s an agonizing look at a rich cultural history, filled with music of Cuba's yesteryear, American dreams and the will to survive against all odds.

Playwright Alex Pérez, whose own grandfather was killed in political protest of Castro's revolution says, “There aren't that many stories out there that discuss the pain of Cuba's secret past. It's important that new generations are reminded of Castro's atrocities. In turn, we can honor older generations that were silenced and the families that were torn apart. It's not just a Cuban story, but a human rights issue that connects on many levels, even today."

Choreography: Alex Pérez and Sebastian Stimman. Production Manager: Monica Daniels. Production Crew: Timothy Hart (Lighting Design), Peter King (Costumes / Props), Philip Odango (Graphic Design).
